TVCBs enabled single-lane traffic control and then protected the structure through a 14-week heritage repair programme.

Affectionately known as the bridge on the Rabbit Run, Broad Bridge is a Grade II listed sandstone structure spanning the River Worfe on the B4176 in Shropshire. Following a significant collision involving a heavy goods vehicle, the historic bridge suffered substantial structural damage, necessitating urgent repair and protection works.

As a listed structure, Broad Bridge required specialist heritage repairs to restore its integrity while preserving its historic character. At the same time, the site needed robust temporary protection and traffic management measures to ensure public safety and prevent further damage during the works.

Temporary Vertical Concrete Barriers (TVCBs) manufactured by Elite Precast Concrete and hired through AA Installations were deployed to provide a secure and effective traffic management solution. The barriers enabled single-lane traffic control prior to the full closure, and continued to protect the structure throughout the repair programme.

The repair works included:

  • Dismantling and rebuilding damaged and weathered stonework, particularly the parapets

  • Repointing using lime mortar appropriate to the original sandstone construction

  • Installation of waterproofing and a reinforced concrete saddle

  • Improved drainage and full carriageway resurfacing

  • Removal of inadequate historic concrete repairs

Due to the complexity and specialist nature of the heritage works, the B4176 was closed to vehicles for approximately 14 weeks. Upon completion, a traffic light system was installed alongside the barrier solution to manage vehicle flow and help safeguard the bridge from future impact damage.

Elite Precast Concrete's Temporary Vertical Concrete Barriers played a vital role in ensuring site safety, protecting a nationally important historic asset, and enabling essential repairs to be carried out efficiently and securely.
